Letting My Aged Care know when someone passes away

Facebook Twitter Email Copy

When a loved one who is registered with My Aged Care passes away, you will need to let My Aged Care know so that their record can be closed. Among other things, this will ensure that no further correspondence is sent to them, their family or their representatives.

You can let My Aged Care know that someone has passed away:

  • through the Australian Death Notification Service
  • by calling My Aged Care on 1800 200 422
  • using your My Aged Care Online Account.

Informing My Aged Care through the Australian Death Notification Service

The Australian Death Notification Service provides a free national service to help you notify many organisations of a person passing away at the same time. You can use this service after a death certificate has been issued, but you don’t need to have the certificate with you.

You will be asked for your details and the details of the person who has passed away. You can then choose which organisations you wish to notify, including My Aged Care. All this is done on the Australian Death Notification Service website. The information you provide is sent to those organisations, who will then contact you to help you through the next steps.

Once you’ve notified My Aged Care through the Australian Death Notification Service, we’ll compare the notification details to our records. We will then use your preferred contact method to let you know what will happen next.

Note: We may ask you to call us if we’re unable to match the notification with a My Aged Care client record. Please be aware that we will never ask you for personal information in an email.

For more information on how My Aged Care handles notifications, please read our privacy policy.

    Additional support

The Australian Death Notification Service also recommends a range of services that can support you during this difficult time. Visit their Support services page for more information.

Could My Aged Care already have this information?

Yes, there are times when we will find out about someone’s passing and we will update our records. This information could come from assessors, service providers or other government agencies.

However, to make sure we get this information, it’s best to contact us through any of the three options provided on this page.

    Who else should I notify?
