Financial hardship assistance

Financial hardship assistance can help you, if for reasons beyond your control, you can’t afford your aged care costs.

Each case is assessed on an individual basis. If you are eligible, the Australian Government will pay some, or all, of your contributions, fees and accommodation – helping you to get the care you need.

What financial help is available?

You may be eligible for financial help if you’re receiving Support at Home, or if you’re in an aged care home for permanent care or residential respite care.

Who can apply for financial hardship assistance?

To be eligible to apply for financial hardship assistance, you must meet certain criteria.

 You must:

  • have had your income and assets assessed for aged care purposes through either
  • have assets valued at no more than $45,969.30 (excluding unrealisable assets), which is 1.5 times the annual basic age pension with supplements
  • not have gifted:

    • more than $10,000 in the current financial year or any of the previous 4 financial years, or
    • more than $30,000 in the past 5 financial years (comprising the current financial year and the previous 4 financial years).

What factors are considered in the hardship assessment?

Beyond the eligibility criteria, an assessment for financial hardship assistance considers a range of other factors. This includes unrealisable assets and essential expenses.

What is the application process?

If you meet the eligibility criteria above, the application process involves several steps.

  1. Apply for financial hardship by completing and lodging the Aged Care Claim for financial hardship assistance form (SA462) with Services Australia. You will also need to provide evidence to support your claim, including evidence of your expenses for the previous 3 months.
  2. Services Australia will assess your application. They may need to ask you for more information, which you will need to provide as soon as you can to avoid delays. They will also check your essential expenses and whether you are eligible for financial assistance from other government programs.
  3. After Services Australia has finished their assessment, they will let you know if you are approved for financial hardship assistance.
  4. If your application is not approved, you can contact Services Australia on 1800 227 475 to discuss it.

What is the assessment process?

Once Services Australia receives your application, it will be assessed within 28 days. You will find out if you are eligible for assistance by letter.

If needed, Services Australia may ask you for more information to support your application. Try to provide that information to them as soon as possible to avoid delays. You will then find out if you are eligible within 28 days after Services Australia have received the additional information.

Services Australia will also check if you are eligible for financial assistance from other government programs before granting financial hardship assistance for your aged care costs.

They will check:

  • if you can access financial assistance through:

If you receive Support at Home, you will not need to pay contributions while your application is being processed.
