A new era in aged care

Last updated:

  • Aged care reforms

The new Aged Care Act and the Support at Home program are now in effect.

This marks a significant step forward in how we deliver aged care in Australia and will create a system that is safer, fairer, and more respectful – with older people placed at the centre.

These reforms respond to the findings of the Royal Commission into Aged Care Quality and Safety and address its number one recommendation – a new rights-based Act.

Your rights, your choices

At the heart of the new system is a Statement of Rights. This means you now have greater choice and control over the care and support you receive.

Your right to make your own decisions about your own life, and have these decisions not just accepted but respected, is protected under the new Act.

And if you want help, the new registered supporter role will also allow you to choose who helps you to make decisions about your aged care, such as a trusted family member or friend.

Support to stay independent at home

More older people are choosing to stay in their own homes for longer. The Support at Home program recognises this and offers tailored services to help you live independently and safely – with confidence.

This includes help with daily tasks, access to assistive technology and home modifications and personalised support based on your care needs and lifestyle preferences.

New funding arrangements, including the introduction of means-tested contributions, will also help ensure services are sustainable for all older people, both now and into the future.

Better oversight and complaints handling

If something isn’t right, you now have more ways to speak up. A new independent Aged Care Complaints Commissioner will make sure your concerns are heard and addressed fairly and efficiently.

All providers, no matter their size or type, must now be registered under a new regulatory model.

They must also meet the strengthened Quality Standards to ensure you receive safe, high-quality care.

The Aged Care Quality and Safety Commission will continue to oversee the sector, with expanded powers to hold providers accountable.
