Abel and Christof had lived together for many years. When Abel began losing his mobility – and could no longer garden, clean the bathroom, or cook – Christof stepped in and they managed.
Abel had to admit that Christof was starting to cook sauerbraten and rouladen almost as well as he did.
When Christof suddenly passed away, Abel managed with services through the Support at Home program. However, after a few years, he started struggling.
After some thought, he decided to look at his aged care options. His home felt empty without his partner, so his preference was to move into an aged care home.
Abel contacted My Aged Care who arranged an aged care assessor to come and discuss his situation and care needs. Abel was approved for residential aged care.
On advice, he used the Find a Provider tool on the My Aged Care website to find an aged care home. He used the Star Rating system in the tool to assess each home’s compliance to quality standards and resident satisfaction. He was also able to make a short list, to find aged care homes that fit his beliefs and lifestyle – including his dietary requirements. He viewed the published room price for each of the available rooms to find somewhere he could afford.
Abel found a home he liked and secured himself a permanent single person room with an ensuite.
Abel was relieved that he no longer had to worry about the chores that kept building up when he was by himself. He felt comfortable knowing that the staff at the home were there to help him. After being alone for some time, he was glad to make new friends to socialise with and decided they should have a German food day soon.
