Applying for an assessment is the first step to accessing government-funded aged care.
It's easy to apply and takes 15 to 20 minutes to complete. Arranging for someone to be with you while you apply can help make the process even easier.
Apply online, by phone or in person
There are 3 ways you can apply for an assessment.
- Online. It’s quick and easy to apply online, and all you need is your Medicare card. It takes 15–20 minutes to complete the application, so make sure you have a little spare time. With your permission, someone else can also apply on your behalf.
Apply for an assessment online now. - By phone. You can call if you’d like to speak with someone. Our staff can answer questions and complete your application over the phone. If you need help calling, please visit Contact us to see the support available, including interpreting services if you speak a language other than English. A friend or family member can join the call with you, if you want.
Call My Aged Care on 1800 200 422. - In person. You can apply in person if you’d like to speak with someone face-to-face. To apply in person, you need to make an appointment with an Aged Care Specialist Officer (ACSO) at a Services Australia office (Monday to Friday, 8am to 5pm). If you want to talk with someone in your own language, mention this when you make an appointment.
Make a booking to talk with an ASCO on 1800 227 475.

Can someone help me apply?
Yes, it’s always helpful to arrange to have a friend, family member or other supporter with you while you complete your application. You don’t have to be alone in this process.
What will you ask me when I apply?
We’ll first ask you some simple questions to check if you meet the requirements for an assessment.
We’ll ask about your current situation and your goals, including:
- your age and health
- how you’re managing at home
- any support you’re currently receiving
- what could help you live well (e.g. to maintain a healthy lifestyle, do more of the things you enjoy or get around more easily)
- if you would like to register a supporter.
Your answers will help us understand your needs and whether you are eligible for an assessment.
If you meet the requirements, we will ask you for a few more details to complete your application.
My Aged Care will keep a record of your application. This means you won’t have to provide the same information again at your assessment.
Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people can request an Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander assessment organisation, if available in their area.

How quickly will I be assessed?
After you submit your application, an assessment organisation will contact you and explain the next steps. An assessor will contact you to:
- confirm your identity and personal details
- check that you are eligible for assessment
- make sure you agree to take part in the assessment
- determine which type of assessment you need.
What happens after I apply?
When you apply, a screening process takes place. Based on the information you provide, you will be referred to an assessment organisation, and you will be assigned a referral priority.
The referral priority will indicate to the assessment organisation how quickly your assessment should take place and how urgently you need services.
An assessment can determine exactly what you need. It can even let you know about services you may not have thought about.
An assessor will contact you to schedule a time to do the assessment, usually at your home.
Depending on how urgent your needs are, your assessment will usually take place within 5 to 40 days.
We’ll also send you a My Aged Care welcome pack in the mail. It has helpful information and outlines your next steps.
You can track your application by logging into your My Aged Care Online Account.
If you need urgent access to aged care support, call My Aged Care on 1800 200 422 to discuss your specific situation. Some services are available on a short-term basis before or without an assessment.
