Assessment outcome: Multipurpose Services Program
The Multi-Purpose Services Program (MPSP) provides flexible and integrated aged care services for older people living in small communities in rural and remote areas. These are communities that don’t have stand-alone hospitals and aged care homes.
To access aged care services funded under the MPSP, you will need to apply, undergo an assessment and be approved for access to one or more services.
Note: If your assessment will be significantly delayed, or you have urgent needs, your local Multi-Purpose Service (MPS) can commence services immediately. These are known as ‘alternative entry arrangements’. They allow you to go through application and assessment processes later, as long as you apply within 30 days of commencing services.

If you are approved for aged care services, the assessment organisation will send you an assessment outcome letter (sometimes called a ‘Notice of Decision’), including a support plan. This will include:
- information about the outcome of your assessment and your application for funded aged care services
- which service(s) you have been approved to access
- the reasons and evidence supporting the decision
- a copy of your support plan developed during your assessment
- referral codes for services if you discussed this referral method with your assessor (including special referral codes for your local MPSP provider).
If you didn’t receive your assessment outcome, find out what to do while you wait.
What to do next
If you’re eligible for the program, the next step is to connect with suitable aged care providers who can deliver the services you need. Usually, your assessor or referrer will help you with this.
There are two ways to do this:
- Your assessor refers you
With your consent, your assessor will send a referral to the relevant provider(s). The referral lets providers know you’re a new client wanting a service and prompts them to contact you. - You refer yourself
If you would like to refer yourself, you will need the referral code given to you by your assessor for each service you are eligible for. You can find providers by using the Find a provider tool or by calling My Aged Care on 1800 200 422 for guidance.
What is a referral code and why do I need it?
A referral code is your unique reference number for receiving services. You give the referral code to your chosen provider. If you lose your code, you can log in to your My Aged Care Online Account to see it. With the code, a provider can view your client record, accept the referral and start organising services for you.
What should I do if I’m not eligible?
If you aren’t eligible for the program, you will have received a letter from your assessor telling you why.
