Hannah’s story

Hannah first developed cataracts in her 60s. At 72, they had become bad enough that she had to stop driving.

This was a huge blow for Hannah. She had always been very active, meeting friends, running errands, and taking part in community activities. Not being able to drive meant not being able to do any of those things.

Hannah became reliant on her daughter, Alinta, to drive her around. But Alinta lived far away and was often busy and Hannah didn’t like being so dependent on her. Feeling down and lonely, she called My Aged Care to organise an aged care assessment.

Hannah was approved for services under the Commonwealth Home Support Program and her assessor developed a support plan to meet her social needs.  

Weekly community transport was arranged to take her to the local seniors’ centre where she could meet her friends. This minimal but practical support helped lift Hannah’s spirits and allowed her to reconnect with her community.
