Trevor’s story

Trevor loved to fix things and potter around his home.

Over many years he had collected discarded wood, nails, tools, and old furniture for future projects, filling most of his home and yard. But Trevor’s mobility wasn’t what it used to be. He was having a hard time navigating all the ‘to be fixed’ furniture he’d collected. He often tripped over things and sometimes hurt himself.

In his backyard, the grass became overgrown, there were piles of wood that were rotting, and many of his tools had rusted. He found it hard to admit, but he needed some help.

On the advice of his neighbour, Trevor called My Aged Care and applied for an aged care assessment.  An assessment organisation called and arranged for an assessor to visit him at home. His assessor said he was able to get services through the Commonwealth Home Support Program and suggested some providers who could help.

Trevor was able to access a one-off clean-up of his house and yard. Even though it was difficult watching them take away the wood and scrap he’d collected, having more space to move around meant life was easier. And, with time, he was relieved.

To help deal with this change, he was also referred to a psychologist. Trevor found this a little confronting at first, but he appreciated being able to talk about it with someone.

After that, he was able to get someone in to maintain his lawn.
