Phuong and Harry’s story

When Phuong’s husband Harry began experiencing incontinence and muscle weakness, she became his full-time carer. But after a while, her own health began to deteriorate, due to the pressure of her caring duties and lack of sleep.

Phuong found it hard to balance her caring duties with other daily activities such as doing the groceries and laundry, as well as looking after her own wellbeing including doing tai chi at the community centre.

After calling My Aged Care, an assessor came to their home and discussed Harry’s needs before approving him for the Support at Home program. This included allocated funding for assistive technology. Harry was given a priority rating and put on the Support at Home prioritisation system. He received a letter once funding was available. Together, Harry and Phoung chose a provider to arrange services to meet Harry’s needs and provide support to Phuong as his carer. He was able to access personal care and someone to help with the laundry.

Harry’s provider also organised continence equipment, such as a bedside commode, to help with his incontinence. A physiotherapist visited regularly to help with his muscle weakness. This helped reduce the amount of support he needed from Phuong.

The assessor also referred Harry to a respite care provider. Harry was able to get 2 hours respite care at home per fortnight.

Thanks to all these services, Harry felt more confident in his daily routine at home. He felt involved in decisions about his care which made him feel more in control. Phuong also appreciated the extra support, allowing her to get back to her tai chi, which made her happier and more relaxed.
