After two falls at home, Gianni could still do most of his daily activities, but he lost the confidence to shower and go to the toilet by himself.
Gianni contacted My Aged Care for an assessment. An assessor approved Gianni for the Restorative Care Pathway through the Support at Home program. He was also allocated funding for assistive technology and minor home modifications.
Gianni found a provider and together they developed a goal plan. This included arranging an occupational therapist to come to Gianni’s home to look for ways to improve his safety in the bathroom, and a physiotherapist to help improve his strength and balance. They also arranged for a personal care worker to provide some short-term support with the goal of helping Gianni regain independence.
His occupational therapist recommended and prescribed some grab rails be installed to use when using the toilet and to get in and out of the shower. They also prescribed a shower chair and an over toilet frame to support Gianni until the rails were installed. His physio worked with him twice a week and gave him daily exercises for his balance, strength, and coordination.
Over 8 weeks, Gianni was able to rebuild his confidence and was safe moving around the bathroom on his own. He was very happy to be completely independent again.
