Tongala Memorial

Tongala Memorial is home to the world’s first Men’s Shed, opened in 1998 and named in honour of Dick McGowan, a local visionary who identified the need for men to congregate to find someone to talk to and activities to do, the concept is now a global force dedicated to pushing forth positive social change. Tongala Memorial is a 70 bed aged care home that has been serving their local community for more than 90 years. It was established in 1925 as the Tongala and District Bush Nursing Memorial Hospital, in memory of the local men and women who served and died in World War I.
