Stolen Generations redress payments exempt from means testing

From 1 October 2026, Stolen Generations redress payments will not count as an asset for the residential aged care means test.

This means that people who have received Stolen Generations payments will not pay more for residential aged care because of that payment. 

The exemption is available for anyone who has received a Stolen Generations redress payment and is living in an aged care home. It also applies to any aged care home resident whose partner has received this type of redress payment.

What do I need to do

To have your redress payment excluded from your assets, you will need to talk to Services Australia or the Department of Veterans’ Affairs.
