Star Ratings help you compare and choose residential aged care homes.
The Department of Health, Disability and Ageing is improving Star Ratings to give you more accurate information about aged care homes and encourage providers to meet their obligations.
Aged care homes receive an Overall Star Rating between 1 and 5 stars based on 4 sub-category ratings: Residents’ Experience, Compliance, Staffing and Quality Measures.
What are the changes?
From 1 November 2025, an aged care home’s Compliance rating will be based on regulatory decisions and assessment against the strengthened Aged Care Quality Standards.
This improvement builds on changes already made to the Staffing rating from 1 October that provide more accurate information about care quality. Aged care homes need to meet both of their care minutes targets to receive 3 stars or more for their Staffing rating.
These changes were supported through the Royal Commission into Aged Care Quality and Safety recommendations, and Star Ratings evaluation and consultation undertaken in 2024.
