The Residents’ Experience Survey is an opportunity for aged care residents to provide feedback and tell us about their experiences. This information provides important insights into the quality of services older people receive in aged care homes.
The results are also used to calculate the Star Ratings for each home.
2024 survey results
More than 36,000 residents across 2,603 homes participated in the survey. Responses to questions were more positive in 2024 compared to 2023 and 2022.
Overall satisfaction improved, with 88% of residents saying they would recommend their home to someone they know. Most residents:
- feel safe
- think staff are kind and caring
- feel they have independence.
Improving food and nutrition
Food satisfaction remains the lowest scoring question in the survey, with 70% of residents saying they were satisfied with the food in their home.
The government is continuing to address this. Providers must report regularly on food and nutrition spending and quality indicators on unplanned weight loss.
When the Aged Care Act 2024 starts, providers must meet the new, dedicated, Food and Nutrition Aged Care Quality Standard. Providers can also access free menu and mealtime reviews and training to improve the dining experience for their residents.
