QHealth Cairns Allied Health is a Cairns & Hinterland Hospital & Health Service team that works with people in their home to establish a tailored plan of treatment. Services focus on prevention, maintenance, or restoration and aim to support people to be independent in their home and community. Swallowing and Communication difficulties in the elderly are often associated with progressive degenerative and/or neurological disorders, cancer, or acquired brain injury. The speech pathologist will assess and provide strategies to help manage an individual's swallowing and/or communication challenges. They also provide education and support to care partners to help them understand the impact on quality of life and wellness due to these challenges. Speech pathology services are usually delivered in your home, however for people living outside the Cairns Urban and Yarrabah area, it may be necessary to attend a health centre or participate in a Telehealth appointment.
