Judy's story

Judy has a lot on her plate. Not only is she a proud grandmother, she is also a loving daughter to Mary. 

Mary has dementia. Recently, she accidentally took her morning tablets twice and ended up in hospital. It was frightening for both her and Judy. Since then, she has moved into an aged care home where the staff can make sure she is well looked after and has the help she needs.

Judy feels better knowing her mother is safe, even though Mary now lives three hours away. Judy tries to visit her most weekends, but is looking forward to a suitable room becoming available at an aged care home nearby, so Mary can also spend more time with her grandkids. When she feels like it's a bit much, she calls a carer counselling service that her friend recommended for support and a listening ear.

 

Judy's story:

  • A few weeks ago, Judy realised her mother's dementia had reached a stage where she needed a higher level of care.
  • After Judy’s initial conversation with the My Aged Care contact centre, Mary received a comprehensive assessment from an Aged Care Assessment Team member. A member from the ACAT said residential care would provide the best support for Mary, and helped Judy to find a place for Mary in a home.

  • The only home that had a space available immediately was three hours away, so Mary moved there. In the meantime, Judy kept an application open at an aged care home just around the corner from her house, which she hopes will have a place available soon.
  • Judy's friend mentioned that she'd used carer counselling services when she was in a similar situation and that she found it useful to talk with a professional about how she was feeling.
  • Judy also knows there are local support groups for people caring for someone with dementia if she ever needs someone to talk to.
